According to the interagency assessment conduced august, , tens of thousands of pastoralists migrated to urban and peri-urban areas of the region between November and April , due to severe drought conditions.
The migration was largely attributed to the loss of nearly 65 per cent of livestock as a result of lack of pasture, water and livestock related diseases. The humanitarian situation has continued to worsen due to the below average Gu rains in May and June. Majority of the affected pastoralists have moved with their remaining livestock to areas in Puntland, Somaliland and Hiraan regions, in search of pasture and water for their livestock.
This migration resulted in the separation of families. Women, children and the elderly have either moved into IDP settlements or with relatives in urban and pre-urban areas while other family members migrated with their livestock in search of pasture.
